Anchorage in 1916 was a raw railroad town only about a decade old, born in 1915 when the federal government auctioned town lots to fund the Alaska Railroad under construction toward Fairbanks. Tent houses, plank sidewalks and freshly cut streets spread across the flats between Ship Creek and the bluff, and workers, merchants and government engineers crowded the settlement. Coal, gold and the promise of interior farmland drew people north, while the railroad's construction camps supplied much of the local wage work. Residents of the time would have known the place as a supply depot and rail terminus that was still finding its shape, far from the established towns of the Lower 48.
