Chicago's stockyards are the subject here, though the catalog record hedges the location with a question mark, so the scene may or may not be the city's famous complex. The Union Stock Yards on the city's South Side opened in 1865 and grew into the center of the American meatpacking trade, handling livestock shipped in by rail from across the Midwest and Plains. Photographs from this period often show the pens, alleys, and crowds of workers and animals that made the yards a symbol of industrial scale. Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel *The Jungle* later drew national attention to conditions there.
