The sitter, identified in the record as Elk Woman, is a Siouan woman photographed in traditional dress, and the catalog places the portrait in Chicago around 1900. The studio of Heyn and Matzen produced many such studio portraits of Native sitters at a time when Chicago drew large crowds to exhibitions and touring shows, and images like this were often sold as keepsakes. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which suggests it was made for wide commercial distribution. Its catalog subjects emphasize clothing and dress, so the costume and personal adornment are central to what the photographer chose to record.
