Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, was a village of farms, fishing docks, and summer visitors in 1925. Its economy rested on the Great South Bay, where baymen worked oysters and clams, and on the duck farms and market gardens that stretched across the surrounding flatlands. The Long Island Rail Road gave residents a direct line to Brooklyn and Manhattan, so the village was slowly becoming a home for commuters as well as a working waterfront. Local people knew Amityville for its bay-side harbor and its position between the old farm roads and the growing suburban towns to the west.
