Hicksville, on central Long Island in Nassau County, was still a farming community in 1925, with fields of vegetables and potatoes lying between its scattered houses and the railroad. The Long Island Rail Road main line ran through the village, and its station made Hicksville a stop for produce shipped to New York City and for commuters who could reach Manhattan by rail. The village took its name from Valentine Hicks, a nineteenth-century Quaker leader and local figure. In the mid-1920s the settled area was still small, but the spread of automobiles and better roads from Queens and Brooklyn was beginning to bring new residents and new houses to the open land of central Nassau.
