Coal miners and vacationers appear together in this 1936 Pennsylvania poster, a pairing that sets it apart from other state views on the board. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced posters like this one during the Depression to promote public attractions and travel, and this example is a color woodcut with bold, flat shapes. Its subjects reflect the state's two faces at the time: tourism and the coal mining that supported much of its economy. A date stamp on the back shows the sheet was in circulation by March 1937.
