The glass negative is labeled with the name Seth Eastman, an Army officer and painter known for his depictions of American Indian life, though the sleeve's information has not been verified. It was made in 1860 using the wet collodion process, which required coating a glass plate, exposing it while still wet, and developing it within minutes. The photographer, D. B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, was active in the years around the Civil War, and the negative belongs to a collection that preserves images from that conflict. Its surviving detail shows how much the demanding process could capture.
