Taken in 1861, this stereograph shows a street in St. Augustine, Florida, a Spanish colonial town founded in 1565 and one of the oldest European-settled cities in the continental United States. It survives as two glass negative plates, one for each eye, which fuse into a single three-dimensional view when seen through a stereoscope. The wet collodion process required each plate to be coated and exposed before it dried, which made outdoor work slow and demanding. The photographer is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Florida left the Union that same year, so the scene records a town on the eve of the Civil War.
