Few places on the Atlantic coast carry as much history as the bastions of Fort Marion, the Spanish stone fortress at St. Augustine, Florida. Built of coquina, a shell-based limestone, the Castillo de San Marcos was begun in 1672 and finished around 1695, and the U.S. Army renamed it Fort Marion in 1825. This 1860 stereograph by photographer James F. Gibson, made as a left and right pair meant to be viewed together, captures the fort on the eve of Florida's secession and the Civil War that followed.
