A Sunday morning mass held in the camp of the 69th New York gives this glass negative its particular subject, a religious service set among a military encampment. The 69th was a New York militia regiment drawn largely from the city's Irish Catholic community, and it became well known when it marched off to war in 1861. The record dates the negative to 1860, which would place it before the conflict began, and the title comes from an unverified note on the negative sleeve, so the exact setting deserves some caution. The wet collodion process used here required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate while it was still wet, which makes these negatives a useful record of how early camp photography was made.
