The gate pictured here stood at the entrance to St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the continental United States, and the photograph was taken in 1861, the year Florida seceded and the Civil War began. Its two halves were exposed as a stereograph pair, meant to be seen together through a handheld viewer that gave the scene depth and was popular in parlors of the era. The glass negatives were made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate before the emulsion dried. The record credits David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and the pair is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
