Sergeant Oscar Ryder of the 7th New York State Militia sits for this portrait, which was made on a glass negative using the wet collodion process. That process, introduced in the early 1850s, required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried, so photographers often worked in portable darkrooms. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the negative, and its 1860 date places it before the war. The title was added later from Civil War caption books, so the image is best understood as a pre-war militia portrait that was later filed with wartime material.
