Byron "Duke" Houck, a pitcher for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics, is the subject here, shown in a portrait-style view that a newspaper photo service could quickly distribute. The record dates the negative to about 1912, based on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, a period when the A's were building the strong teams that won several American League pennants in the early 1910s. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold pictures to newspapers and magazines, made many such glass negatives of ballplayers, so the image reflects how fans of the day met players through print. Its later home in the Library of Congress has kept a large body of these early sports images available to researchers.
