Grover Cleveland Alexander is the pitcher shown here in his Philadelphia National League uniform, a detail that ties the portrait to the team he joined in the early 1910s. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of the day, made the glass negative, and its caption cards list the subject as "Alexander, Phils, 1913." The date on this print is an estimate, based on research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee in 2006. Alexander became one of the most successful pitchers of his era, and the Bain collection is valued today for documenting the players and ballparks of that period.
