This color halftone promotes the London & South Western Railway as the best way for American travelers to reach London from New York, by way of either Plymouth or Southampton. The railway ran from London's Waterloo station to both ports, so the advertisement presents the line as the land link that completed a transatlantic crossing. Southampton had become a busy stop for Atlantic liners by the 1890s, and the company competed with other British railways for the American tourist trade of that period. Pamphlets like this one, printed between about 1890 and 1910, were meant to appeal to travelers planning a European trip.
