A railroad advertisement first, this 1888 poster invites travelers to take the Great Rock Island Route to Columbus, Ohio, for the Grand Army of the Republic reunion. Its title borrows "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!," a marching song from the Civil War era. The Grand Army of the Republic was the largest organization of Union veterans, and its national encampments drew large crowds to host cities. Rand McNally, the Chicago firm known for maps and travel guides, printed the piece, which shows how railroads courted veterans' travel. The record also lists the title "Sheridan at Winchester," a reference to Philip Sheridan's 1864 Virginia battle, but that caption is unverified.
