The title promises "the great palace reclining-chair route," which points to a feature that drew riders in the late nineteenth century: seats that tilted back for long journeys. The Chicago & Alton Railroad carried passengers between Chicago and St. Louis and other Midwestern points, and carriers of this era used posters like this one to set their service apart in a crowded market. The color lithograph was produced by Ballin & Liebler of New York, a firm known for commercial posters of the period, and it shows how railroads sold comfort as much as speed.
