Joseph Pennell's watercolor of the railway station at York shows the place as a working scene rather than a monument, with the wash and white heightening catching the light on the platform and the iron and glass of the roof. Pennell, an American illustrator and printmaker who spent much of his career in England, made a long series of railway subjects in the 1890s, drawn at a time when the steam railway was still reshaping English towns and when stations were among the busiest public spaces in the country. York was a major junction on the lines radiating north and east, so its station was a place of constant arrival and departure. The sheet is inscribed and signed by the artist, and it was catalogued among his early London drawings.
