From a high vantage point, this 1909 etching turns Pittsburgh's rail yards and river crossings into a dense web of tracks, bridges, and smokestacks. Joseph Pennell, the American illustrator and printmaker known for his industrial city scenes, made his Pittsburgh views around the end of the 1900s, when the city's steel and rail economy was at its height. Bird's-eye views like this one were prized for showing how transportation and manufacturing fit together across a city. Pennell's sharp line and evident fascination with the scale of heavy industry are what make the work worth a close look.
