Here a horse shares the sheet with a rose and a narcissus, a mix that suggests the engraving was meant as a collection of motifs rather than a single scene. It was published in London in 1663 under the name of Peter Stent, a printseller who produced many small, inexpensive engravings for a broad market. Sheets like this one, with animals and flowers set side by side, were commonly used as models by painters, draftsmen, and embroiderers who needed ready-made forms to copy. The restrained, carefully cut lines show how engravers of the period built up texture and shading with parallel strokes.
