Asil, a white Trakehner, was one of Sultan Abdul Hamid II's favorite horses, and this print carries captions in both Ottoman Turkish and French. The Trakehner breed was developed in East Prussia and prized for its athleticism, which suited a ruler who kept a large imperial stud near Istanbul. The photograph is by Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio that documented the Ottoman court in the 1880s and 1890s. Its album, part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress, also includes saddles and doorways, hinting at the setting of the imperial stables.
