The horse pictured here is Asil, a Trakehner of German breeding that the record identifies as the favorite mount of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Trakehner horses were bred at the Trakehnen stud in East Prussia, and the Ottoman court drew on European bloodlines to improve its own stables. The print comes from an album of views of the imperial stud farm outside Istanbul, made by the Constantinople studio Abdullah Frères between 1880 and 1893. Its caption appears in Ottoman Turkish and French, and the saddle and doorway in the frame place the animal in a working royal stable.
