Titled "Kebut," this albumen print shows a reddish horse of that name, captioned in both Ottoman Turkish and French. It was made by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio that was among the best-known commercial and court photographers in the Ottoman capital, and it is dated to between 1880 and 1893. It comes from an album of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul, part of the Abdul-Hamid II collection at the Library of Congress. Sultan Abdul Hamid II's court maintained a large stable, and the album reflects the sultan's interest in documenting his horses and presenting the empire's prestige through photography.
