Darli, a gray Arabian, is the subject of this print, which the album caption identifies by name and which was made by the Constantinople studio Abdullah Frères. The studio was among the best-known commercial photographers in the Ottoman capital, and its work was sold to visitors and European audiences. The picture belongs to a series of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul, collected in an album that later passed into the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress. Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909, took an interest in Arabian horses, and the bilingual captions in Ottoman Turkish and French show the album was made for an audience beyond the palace.
