The subject is a nine-year-old bay Arabian horse named Sedid Saklavi, identified by a caption written in both Ottoman Turkish and French. The photograph comes from an album of horses at the imperial stud farm on the outskirts of Istanbul, part of the Abdul-Hamid II collection. Arabian horses were prized at the Ottoman court, and the sultan's stables served as a showcase for breeding and prestige. The image was made by Abdullah Frères, a well-known Constantinople photography firm of the late nineteenth century, and its careful studio approach to animal portraiture shows the attention to detail that made the firm's work popular.
