Few pictures in this collection name a single animal, but this albumen print is captioned "Cevher," the name of an Arabian horse photographed at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul. The Abdullah Frères studio of Constantinople, one of the best-known commercial photographers of the Ottoman capital, produced the image sometime between 1880 and 1893, during the reign of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II. The sultan's stables prized Arabian bloodlines, and the photographs made for his albums served as a record of prized animals and the state's equestrian pride. The caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, a reminder of how the court presented itself to European visitors.
