This albumen print shows a bay Arabian horse named Kessaf, captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French. The Abdullah Frères studio, a well-known Constantinople photography firm, made it sometime between 1880 and 1893, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The sultan's album presents the horse as part of the Imperial Stud Farm on the outskirts of Istanbul, where the Ottoman court kept Arabian horses prized for their bloodlines. The picture belongs to a broader effort to document the imperial stables and their horses for the palace.
