Its caption identifies a gray Arabian horse, and the print was made by Abdullah Frères, a Constantinople studio that worked for the Ottoman court. It comes from an album of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul, part of the photographs gathered for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909. Arabian horses were prized across the Ottoman world for their bloodlines and served as signs of royal standing, so a studio portrait of a single animal reflects both breeding pride and the court's interest in careful documentation. The albumen process, widely used for photographic prints in this period, gives the image its soft, warm tones.
