A gray horse named Bahadir is the subject of this albumen print, taken at the Imperial Stud Farm in the environs of Istanbul. The studio of Abdullah Frères, a photography firm in Constantinople that served the Ottoman court, made it between 1880 and 1893, during the reign of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II. The caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, and the print comes from an album of the sultan's photographs. Such pictures document the imperial stables and the prized horses kept there, and the record's tag for a body of water hints at the waterside setting around the farm.
