A British-bred horse named Riyu is the subject of this albumen print, which the album caption identifies as part of a series of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm outside Istanbul. The photographs were taken by Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio of the Abdullah brothers, Armenian photographers who worked for the Ottoman court and its patrons. The image comes from an album assembled for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who reigned from 1876 to 1909 and kept large stables that prized imported horses. Its bilingual Ottoman Turkish and French captions show how the palace presented its breeding program to Western visitors.
