A rider on horseback drags a travois, a frame of poles lashed into an A-shape with a platform between them, and the catalog also lists infants among the subjects, so the picture shows family travel as well as horsemanship. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1908 for volume 5 of his *North American Indian*, where it appears on page 140. The Atsina, also known as the Gros Ventre, lived on the northern Great Plains, where horses had transformed how families moved camp, hauling tipis and belongings over long distances.
