Edward S. Curtis made this portrait of Horse Capture, an Atsina man, in Montana around 1908, and the title alone signals its place on a board devoted to horses. The braids, feathered ornaments, necklaces, and fringed leather shirt are the kind of regalia Curtis often arranged for his sitters. Horses reached the northern Plains through trade in the 1700s and transformed life there, making hunting, travel, and warfare faster and more far-reaching. Curtis's plate was later published in a supplement to *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey of Native peoples.
