Harness racing, known as trotting, drew large crowds to tracks across the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the Grand Circuit was the most prestigious string of meets in that world. Here a trotter pulls a driver in a light two-wheeled sulky, the low racing cart that let the driver sit close to the horse and shift weight for speed. Horses of this kind were bred and trained for a gait in which the legs move in diagonal pairs, and the sport rewarded both stamina and fine control. The picture is worth a close look for the tight harness, the stretched posture of the animal, and the minimal cart, which together show how much engineering went into a sport built on a single animal's pace.
