Aquia Creek Landing, on the Potomac in Stafford County, Virginia, was one of the busiest supply points in the region during the war, and this view shows its wharf crowded with transport vessels and stacked stores. The Union army used the landing to move men and supplies onto a rail line bound for Fredericksburg, so the scene documents the logistics that kept large armies in the field. The record credits David B. Woodbury, whose subject headings link his work to the 1862 Burnside Expedition to North Carolina. The catalog date of 1860 predates the fighting, so the exact moment of exposure is uncertain.
