Few places in Edo were as famous as the Yoshiwara, the walled and licensed pleasure quarter where courtesans and their houses drew crowds of townspeople, and this scene turns to its quieter hours after dawn. The record dates the print to 1780, a period when the district was a favorite subject for artists of the floating world. The engraver listed, Koizumi Minokichi, worked much later, from 1833 to 1906, so the date may refer to an earlier original design rather than this printing. Viewers may want to note the catalog's subject tags, courtesans and brothels, which place the image within that world.
