Taken when the sitter was only six months old, this hand-colored sixth-plate daguerreotype shows the infant Harrison gray Fiske seated upright on a chair beside a draped table. Fiske later became a New York newspaper editor and the husband of the actress Minnie Maddern Fiske, whose papers at the Library of Congress hold the picture. Hand-coloring was a common finishing touch on daguerreotypes of the period, warming cheeks and fabric in a medium otherwise limited to silver tones.
