This drawing is a plan of the Library of Congress, and its record lists a Gothic style label, so it may represent a design study rather than the finished building. The library began in 1800 in the Capitol, and after British troops burned that building in 1814, Thomas Jefferson sold his personal collection of about 6,400 volumes to help rebuild it. As the collection outgrew its quarters, the library moved into its own building, the Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897. Plans like this one show how architects worked out layout and room arrangement long before a structure took its final form.
