Washington Park, in downtown Cincinnati, is shown here alongside the Music Hall, the large stone building on the park's edge that has hosted concerts, opera, and civic gatherings since it opened in 1878. A monument with the name Becker on its base stands in the park, one of the many public sculptures that filled American city parks around 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country in the early 1900s to document cities and landmarks, made this large glass negative, which preserves the architecture and streetscape of that period in fine detail.
