This panoramic view shows a line of automobiles on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, during the Glidden Tour. The tour was an early reliability contest for touring cars, named for Charles Jasper Glidden, and its stops drew crowds eager to see the new machines. The long 10-by-48-inch format suits a scene like this, where a procession of cars stretches across the frame. The print was registered for copyright in July 1909 by Peninsular Engraving Co. of Detroit, which places it in the same moment when automobiles were moving from novelty toward everyday use.
