The U.S.S. *Marblehead* was a steel cruiser of the late nineteenth-century U.S. Navy, a class of ship built as the country expanded its fleet and moved toward a larger role at sea. This picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American places and ships for sale as views and postcards. The date is estimated from the company's 1901 catalog, which places the negative somewhere between 1894 and 1901. The plate was later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress through that collection.
