The subject here is the U.S.S. *Marblehead*, a steel protected cruiser of the United States Navy, rather than a generic warship. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American landmarks, ships and scenery from the 1890s into the 1920s, made this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative in the years between 1894 and 1901. The ship was built in the early 1890s as the Navy began replacing its aging wooden fleet with modern steel vessels. Its service in the Caribbean during the Spanish-American War gave it a place in the naval history of that period. Glass plates like this one captured fine detail, so the photograph preserves the ship's rigging, hull lines and deck structures.
