Published in London in May 1779 by J.F.W. DesBarres, this view of Boston was made after British troops had left the city in March 1776, so it looks back at a harbor the Royal Navy had recently held. It is an aquatint with etching, and it also appeared in *The Atlantic Neptune*, the large atlas of charts and coastal views that DesBarres compiled for the Royal Navy between 1777 and 1781. Prints like this one were meant to help naval officers recognize harbors and navigate unfamiliar American coasts during the Revolutionary War.
