Cy Young appears here as a Boston Americans pitcher, placing the portrait in the early years of the American League, which began play in 1901. A veteran of the National League before he joined Boston, Young won 28 games for the club in 1902, the season this print is dated to. The date and title rest on research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee in 2006. The picture is a Bain News Service print, from a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs of current events, and it is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress.
