Few children's books of the 1830s made a bolder claim than *The Only True Mother Goose*, issued in Boston by Monroe & Francis in 1833. The title hints at a crowded market, since by then several publishers in England and America were printing their own Mother Goose collections, each presenting its text as the authentic one. These verses had circulated orally for generations before they reached print, and the Boston firms helped turn them into small, illustrated volumes that children could hold and read aloud.
