Ty Cobb, the Detroit Tigers outfielder, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the right, a pose that was typical of studio portraits of athletes in the early 1910s. Cobb was already one of the most celebrated players in the American League by about 1912, known for his aggressive base running and a batting average that would eventually lead the league in most seasons of his career. Portraits like this one circulated as tobacco cards, newspaper illustrations and team publicity, helping build the public image of ballplayers in an era before television. The print is held by the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
