Ty Cobb, the Detroit Tigers outfielder, is the subject of this February 1914 portrait, one of the many photographs of him that circulated during his years in the American League. By then Cobb was the league's most feared hitter and base runner, having already won several batting titles, and he was known for an aggressive, hard-sliding style that drew both admiration and hostility. Photographs like this one helped build the public image of the era's star players.
