Few players of the deadball era drew as much attention as Ty Cobb, the Detroit outfielder shown in this portrait, which is dated around February 19, 1915. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, part of the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures went out to newspapers across the country, so it shows how players were presented to the public at the time. Cobb spent his career with Detroit in the American League and was known for his fierce hitting and aggressive base running. Researchers with the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee worked out the title and date in 2006.
