Tyrus Raymond Cobb appears in a studio portrait from Harris & Ewing, the Washington, D.C., firm known largely for its photographs of politicians, officials, and visitors to the capital. The print is numbered 2716, but no date is recorded, so the exact year of the sitting is uncertain. Cobb spent most of his career with the Detroit Tigers, won eleven American League batting titles, and was nicknamed the Georgia Peach. The portrait is a reminder that a star ballplayer of his era could sit for the same studios that served the nation's political figures.
