Two of the American League's best hitters of the early 1910s stand side by side here, each gripping a bat: Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers and Joe Jackson of the Cleveland Naps. The picture was registered for copyright in September 1913, and the Library of Congress dates it to about that year. Its title was devised by Library staff, so the portrait reflects how the men were promoted and photographed in the period rather than a caption from the time. Cobb and Jackson were rivals on the field, and seeing them posed together shows how the press and the public paired the league's top batsmen.
