Two of the American League's best hitters of the day stand side by side here, each with a bat on his shoulder: Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers and Joe Jackson of the Cleveland Naps. The Library of Congress dates the print to about 1913, and its copyright was registered that September, so it was made while both men were near the peak of their careers. Cobb and Jackson were among the league's most feared batsmen in the early 1910s, and pictures pairing players from rival cities like this one were a common way to market the sport to fans.
